Introduction

Increased demand for energy and the rising level of Green House Gases emission from urban centers and cities is an agenda that needs to be dealt with on a global level. The challenges presented by energy demands and Green House Emission are of high magnitude and require designing and implementation of special strategies aimed at finding alternative sources of energy, energy-saving plans and decrease emission levels.

Main text

The way of life and prosperity of any nation largely depends with the availability of energy. Energy provides for basic needs like cooking, warmth, transport, modern appliances operation and industrial processes. Most of the energy comes from fossil fuels, which are being depleted at a higher rate and at the same time emit large quantities of carbon dioxide which is the main contributor to Green House Gases. As such new source of renewable energy is one of the utmost solutions to the current crisis in our cities sustainable economic achievement.

Renewable sources of energy will reduce over-dependence on fossil fuel and provide a long-lasting solution to the issue of Carbon dioxide emissions. It is important to know that though renewable sources of energy have potential negative impacts, these impacts can be managed easily as opposed to non-renewable sources of energy. Some of the sources that give renewable energy are geothermal, biomass, hydro generators, solar heater and wind power. These sources provide clean energy to the all city’s operations, reducing pollution.

Another key strategy is maximization of energy efficiency in all infrastructures and buildings found within a city. This is possible through decentralization of all energy generation sources in a way that optimizes flow of energy in an integrated manner and reduces Green House Gases. All energy users in the cities and surrounding environment should be linked up to facilitate recycling and resources exchange networks.

Energy conservation policy is another strategy aimed at ensuring energy efficiency. In this strategy, energy wastage is reduced by turning off all those equipment that use energy when they are not in use. This includes lights, room heaters, cooling fans, air conditioners and other appliances that use energy. Energy conservation measures save over 12% of energy used within a building. The teaming up of city planners and appliances manufacturers are likely to reduce energy usage by a considerable percentage. In this arrangement, manufacturer will produce appliances that use less energy and have intelligence control that put them off when they are not in use.

Summary

Energy Efficiency is a major challenge facing city planners and concerned parties. Some of the key strategy aimed at achievement of energy efficiency includes switching to the use of renewable source of energy which can be regenerated and does not produce carbon dioxide, Energy conservation policies and maximization of energy efficiency. When implemented, these strategies will improve energy efficiency in cities and urban areas.
